Tropical Lifestyle has a wide range of DIY kits, both in standard and custom sizes for all our Bali Huts, African thatched, Shingle and full range of Gazebos.
Each kit comes with everything you need, including detailed instruction manual. The only thing you need to do if you are putting your posts into the ground is pick up a couple of bags of concrete from your local hardware.

It is important to note that over the past 26 years we have ironed out many “bugs” from our kits. Some of the problems we have found and fixed are listed below. Of course there are many more tricks and tips 26 years of experience bring with it, but below are just a few:
We have found that the best timber to use in our kits by far is high grade Australian or New Zealand termite resistant treated pine. We source directly from the timber mills and are able to offer premium grade timber with few or no knots thus enhancing the quality of your structure.
There is only one supplier of fasteners we have found to be able to consistently supply galvanised, bolts and screws that will not strip the heads out.
As John Law’s used to say “ oils ain't oils”; the same is true for wood stains, “stains aren’t stains”. Over time we have been able to track down premium stains that cover and suit the high grade timber we are suppling in our kits. After all we want you to have a Bali Hut you would be proud to show your friends!
A big misconception is that timber from Bali is better. Nothing could be further from the truth! Did you know that coconut posts are hollow and rot, not to mention termites love them !!......... So what are you after a cheap Bali hut your local termites can have a feast on, or a quality structure that will last for years ??
Did you also know that due to climate and humidity changes Balinese coconut will split ?? Yep, imagine 3 months after getting your new hut erected it all splits. Then you ring the company who installed it up for warranty and they tell you “Sorry, its not structural its just cosmetic"...
The most durable and authentic looking posts are round and guaranteed by our supplier for 40 years in ground.
The myth “our thatch is grown in winter so it is better quality “ is not quite true. In Indonesia Alang grass is actually a wild, uncontrollable plant, it just happens to make a great roofing material.
Talking about Alang Alang, one of the most important things that needs to be done is the rafters must not end inside the beams. "What!?" I hear you say? Well its simple: if the rafters do end inside the beams, yes it is much easier and faster to manufacture your roof structure, but your Alang Alang grass extends past it on a sharp angle and within a few months will snap off. After about a year you will loose about half of it; not cool!! We have devised a special extension / kicker to our structure to stop this happening. Sure, it takes another 3 timber cuts per rafter and at least an extra 12m of timber that other DIY Bali Huts kits don’t supply, but the end result is you are happy (because we supplied you with a quality product ) and you then tell your friends (they call and order their own Bali hut because they love yours) and that is what we all want !!
One thing is for sure: When installed at correct intervals Bali huts are 100% water proof and lower the temperature underneath them by 10%
Another interesting fact from other companies is that crowns and ridge capping are often an “option” that you only find out about once your kit arrives. Our DIY kits always come with the crown or ridge capping you require. After all you are after an authentic look, not just a cheap imitation.

As standard our kits are stained, engineered and include crowns or ridges and finials.
Other sizes available if you can't find anything above to suit your needs. Just let us know and we can custom make for you.
Our DIY kits are preassembled and pre stained. This means that everything will go together correctly with the minimum fuss.

All our kits are carefully packaged for transport. We only use well known transport companies such as Main Freight, TNT and Toll Ipec. However, if you live near Bundall on the Gold Coast you are quite welcome to pick up your own kit. Most kits will fit into a box trailer or ute. Depending on the size of DIY kit, you may need ladder racks to hold some of the longer pieces of timber.
